Obituary

Edna Garrett

Passed away peacefully at Cornwall Hospice on November 2, 2026, Edna Garrett (née Casselman) of Morrisburg, at the age of 93.

Edna was the loving mother of John Schwerdtfeger of Sydenham, and a much-loved grandmother to Andrew Schwerdtfeger (Nicole) of Kelowna, B.C., and Brian Schwerdtfeger of Sydenham. She was a proud great-grandmother to Mayva, Adam, Beau and Kaiu, and a dear sister to Connie Hill of Morrisburg and Agnes Jackson of Winnipeg. She will also be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Edna lived through more than nine decades of tremendous change and faced the challenges of life with strength, determination, and resilience. At young age she learned to rely on herself and became fiercely independent, a quality she carried throughout her life. But for all her independence and strength, Edna loved the people around her deeply. Her family and friends meant everything to her, and she was a genuinely kind and caring person who cherished the relationships she built over a lifetime.

Those who knew Edna will also remember her wonderful personality. She could be stern when the occasion called for it, and if she knew you were pulling her leg, there was an unmistakable sideways glance that came over the top of her glasses. When she was surprised, touched or given a gift, her heartfelt “oh my garsh” became something of a family trademark. It was completely Edna: genuine, appreciative and endearing, and something her family will forever be able to hear in her voice.

Edna also shared a very special bond with her beloved dog and constant companion, Zoe. The two were immensely attached to one another, and Zoe brought Edna tremendous companionship, comfort and happiness.

Edna was strong, independent and resilient, but above all, she loved deeply. She leaves behind a family who loved her and who will carry forward countless memories of her kindness, her strength, her expressions and all the little mannerisms that made Grandma simply Grandma.

Edna was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Ida Casselman (née Canough); her sisters, Jean Casselman and Marjorie Jordan; her brothers, Alton, Rae, Ross and Sam Casselman; her stepbrothers, Larry, Bob, Darcy and Don Aikman; and her infant grandson, Adam.
