Obituary

On August 13, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones and his loyal dog Bennett, Kevin Albert Mackler found his way home one last time. True to form, Kevin waited until he could be in the comfort of his own space, a place filled with love, before taking his final breath.

Kevin was born on June 4, 1959, to Jack Mackler and the late Shirley Mackler (née Dowdall). He was the beloved husband of Margaret Mackler (née Hume) and the proud, devoted father of Meaghan Mackler (David Wallace). His love for his family was the center of his life, and he carried that devotion in everything he did.

He grew up with a big, close-knit family and shared a lifetime of memories with his siblings: Karen Mackler (Dave), Glen Mackler (Lisa), Brenda Bakker (Bill), and John Mackler (Anne). He also had a special bond with his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim, Carolyn (Gerry), Laurie, and Adie, whom he loved like siblings. Kevin was the proud uncle to Colin, Thomas, Sarah, Emily, Kyle, Connor, Brittany, Lauren, Sam, Katie, Ty, Rachael, Lorelai, and Daniel. Each of them knew they could always count on his warmth, humour, and unwavering support.

Kevin's life was not without its challenges. He faced more than his share of health struggles, yet he never let them harden his heart or slow him down. His generosity knew no bounds, his outlook remained positive, and he always found a way to adapt so he could keep doing the things he loved. He had a naturally goofy side and a quick wit, always ready with a joke or a playful comment to make people laugh. Even on the hardest days, he found a reason to smile and often plenty to talk about.

Kevin had the gift of gab and could strike up a conversation with absolutely anyone, anywhere. He loved listening to
people's stories just as much as he loved sharing his own, and he had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend within minutes.
Kevin treasured the camaraderie of sharing jokes and stories with his Hydro buddies and hunting crew, and he deeply valued the friendships he built over the years. He also enjoyed the many outings and get-togethers he and Margaret shared with their closest friends. He had an unwavering love for sports, whether cheering on the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Blue Jays, Green Bay Packers, or Ottawa Redblacks, and he never missed a chance to talk about the latest game.

To know Kevin was to know someone who valued connection above all else, whether through a heartfelt chat, a shared laugh, or a lighthearted moment that lifted your day. His passing leaves a deep ache, but also a legacy of resilience, generosity, love, and an open heart that welcomed everyone in.

A Celebration of Kevin's Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Chesterville on Thursday, August 21st from 3-8 p.m., with a tribute beginning at 5:30 p.m. Light food and drinks will be served, and all who knew Kevin are welcome to join in sharing stories and honouring his memory.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kevin's name to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.  If you are making your donation online or by cheque directly to the charity, please include the following note with your gift "please notify the family". Online condolences may be made at marsdenmclaughlin.com.

Above all else, Kevin's greatest joy was his family. His love for Margaret, Meaghan, and David was boundless, and he carried that love into every conversation, every laugh, and every moment spent together. That love will be felt, and missed, for the rest of our lives.
